About LunaSphere

LunaSphere is a free tool for checking your baby's head shape at home.

The Cephalic Index (CI) and Cranial Vault Asymmetry Index (CVAI) are standard clinical measurements used worldwide to assess infant head shape—CI for flatness/elongation, CVAI for left-right symmetry. We want to bring this expertise to every family—just snap a photo at home, and feel confident knowing how your little one is developing.

How to Detect

Good photos lead to accurate results:

Angle: Shoot straight down from above, camera parallel to baby's head
Lighting: Soft and even, avoid harsh shadows
Hair: Best results right after bath when hair is wet and flat
Background: Simple and clean
Position: Baby lying relaxed, head natural

No worries—it's usually just a photo issue. A quick adjustment should help:

Make sure the full head outline is visible
Check that lighting is bright and even
Shoot straight down, not from the side
Use a plain background

If it still doesn't work after a few tries, the "Profile Match" feature is a great visual alternative.

LunaSphere is a web app—phones, tablets, and computers all work with any modern browser.

We recommend using your phone for the easiest photo-taking experience. No download needed.

Results & Advice

Two head shape measurements:

CI (Cephalic Index)

Head width ÷ length—shows if the head is flat or long. Normal range: 76-90%. Below 76% is elongated, above 90% is flat.

CVAI (Cranial Vault Asymmetry Index)

Difference between diagonal measurements—shows symmetry. < 3.5% normal, 3.5-7% mild, 7-12% moderate, > 12% severe asymmetry.

Don't panic—most head shape issues can improve with proper care.

Mild cases usually just need consistent daily care; moderate cases need closer attention and a doctor visit if no improvement; severe cases should see a pediatrician soon.

The first 6 months are the best window for improvement. Visit Parent Academy for detailed guidance and care tips—we're here to help you through this journey.

Every 2-4 weeks to track trends.

0-6 months: Changes fast—every 2 weeks
6-12 months: Slowing down—monthly
After 12 months: Mostly stable—as needed

We know you want to keep a close eye on your little one, but head shape changes gradually. Measuring too often can add stress over tiny variations. Take it easy—focus on the trend.
